The design/build lab is a 3rd year studio that collaborates with local clients and communities to help provide architectural solutions. The project chosen for us was to design and build a permanent structure for Covington's local farmer's market that previously met in a parking lot. The fall semester was spent studying existing farmer's markets, proposing individual designs, and a movement towards one master plan based on the chosen aspects of our individual designs. During the spring semester, the focus shifted to develop highly detailed construction documents, construction of modular components at VT, and final construction of the market in Covington. In the remaining months of 2012 after the completion of the Market, our design/ build team received the Virginia Society AIA Design Excellence Award, the Woodworks Design Award for exterior wood use, and honorable mention for the OnePrize Design Science Award.
